Defense Buildings

Do the defense building actually contribute much to your base?

Reason I'm asking is that I have most of them now (except the gold ones!) and they take up a lot of room and with the base extensions costing $8m + now, I am now wondering if they are actually bringing anything to my defense stats or whether I just sell them and get the nuc plants instead of paying for more base expansions.
