View Full Version : To those on the fence, what "sunk costs" keeping you in the game?

Note that poll is multi-choice.

Bonus question: are you hanging on because you enjoy the game barely enough to keep playing or because it has become an obligation/addiction that you can't currently shake?

EDIT: Typos made are always in the unmodifiable thread titles...

Seductive concept, feel free to include this in "other".

They say insanity is when you do the same thing over and over again, knowing what the result will be... *sigh* I has a depression.

Getting that 5th emerald will cure this...*picks up iphone*

I was so pissed i wasnt getting my 3rd and 4th emerald since my 2nd lockbox. I just got them 2 in a row -_-

My explanation would be, I did enjoy going up in the ranks in the game, but now that I'm there its gotten boring. I'm on the forum longer daily than on the game.

And I don't mean any of those 7ft, giant baby with dwarfism analogies that starburst uses, though this is a serious contradiction.

I thought "they" was Einstein, who said insanity was doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results. This means that those who still enjoy the game are not technically insane because the results do often change. Whether or not the change is an improvement is a different discussion.

I guess my response would have to be filed under "other". When I gave up on minimizing XP gain I figured I would try to reach level 200 at whatever natural pace the game allows and see what happens. In terms of playability, the game itself seems to run a lot more smoothly with the last update and my overall enjoyment went up slightly because of that. The Tapjoy gold that bought me two Gentlemen's Clubs was a huge bonus. If there had never been any free gold I'm not sure I would still be playing, although I can't really say at which point I might have quit without it.

Overall this game has ups and downs. I think it still shows lots of potential too, but that's just an observation strictly from a game experience point of view. Many of the things that I think would be improvements may not fit the business model, may be too difficult to program (I wouldn't know), or may have unforeseen effects on other game elements that I didn't consider. Ultimately it is up to Funzio to decide how good this game can or will be, and how they want to go about running their business.

Whether or not the change is an improvement is a different discussion.Well I used the word "they" because a lot of people since then had put twists on it as culture has come to change and refine its norms etc.
But are we really technically not insane? I mean I think we have put up with quite a bit:

1) Defense building fraud
2) SA58 gun nerf (almost instantly)
3)Mossberg nerf (pretty much instantly)
4)m4a1 nuke (que time lapse of people placing energy equal to that of a swimming pool full of redbull on farming and Funzio's response time.)
5)game crashes/glitches

We didn't ever want to believe these things would happen but they did.

"By your powers combined, I am Captain Plan..." Oh wait those aren't good things.

Already razed my lvl 51 Hood to the ground and planted a nice environmentally friendly forest in its place. (G-wiz you are my only remaining human allie, if you care to take a walk in the trees.)

Am so frickin close to doing the same on my lvl 101 acct. The only thing giving me pause is the rm i invested. Which is also a source of anger cuz of the m4 thing.

This m4 bs and the bs excuse for doing it is like a slap in the face.

I made the mistake of investing into the community and "wasting" many hours helping others with their questions.

As a result it has left me feeling betrayed for some reason.

In addition after investing all that time and then being ignored by CJ54 (yeah, i know your here right now) & CC Mark in pm's trying to get clarification shows how much they appreciate our involvement.

Amazing they can swoop in to close a thread they don't like at the drop of a hat but seem to ignore porn and profane offensive trolls comments which further reinforces the feeling of disdain shown us.

I expect to be banned for speaking against the party line yet others who have violated the "policies" with horrendously offensive comments that support funzio are allowed to remain.

Thanks to all who befriended me and offered help when i was new. Charlie Mike, Boys!

Voted 'Other', explanation as requested...

I played the game initially because I like the turn based, leveling up type games. Fire Emblem games on GBA a good example.

But I like the random element that this game brings.

Yes Funzio moves the goalposts, Yes that makes it hard to plan a long term strategy with any sense of predictability, Yes that must cause frustration for many.

Me, I like that variability, it makes it more real.

Of course you can have a strategy, but it has to be fluid, you have to be able to adapt to the Grenades that Funzio throw in every now and again.

Look at Funzio as being the Government, and assume that they will do things in their own best interests, whilst telling you that it is all for your own good, to keep you paying your taxes (Gold) and voting for them (staying in the game). Be grateful that tax is optional (How cool would that be in real life).

Also consider that Funzio are experimenting on us also - as we look for strategies to increase stats, they are looking for strategies to increase revenue. There is no malice in their actions, it's business. They will make mistakes, but if those mistakes have a negative impact on turnover, you can be fairly sure the mistakes will be corrected, or balance somehow restored. It's just another variable.

Complaining on the forums might cause some ripples in the water, but the only numbers that really count to Funzio are reducing user numbers and reducing Gold revenue numbers. It is those numbers that will make Funzio react fast. If they see an exodus of players, or a 20% reduction in daily Gold spend because of an action they have taken, they will react just like you would if someone started farming your hood on an hourly basis and eating into your economy.

That said, was the Emerald event brought forward to offset the fuss about Rusties? Quite possibly it was.

So while Funzio makes the rules, and they can try and bend you to their will with all of the tools at their disposal - how you play the game remains in your control, the key choices are yours to make... and Tax is optional :)

In conclusion, whilst I don't agree with all Funzio decisions, I do like the variables that their actions impose upon us. Adapt to your circumstances and thrive. Just like life.

I feel that most ppl's strat was based around not worrying about weapons because the M4 covered it. I understand funzio's point of not having a best of the best weapon but.... honestly ppl who are serious about the game will capitolize on a good weapon. It's stupid to expect ppl to "have mulitple different equipment" (per Mark) because there's only going to be 1 best atk and 1 best def weapon. Anyone who plays any MMO will do research and figure stuff out like the DD and M4. Anyone who doesn't take advantage of knowledge are casual players.

I don't see a point to lvling up anymore because there doesn't seem to be any reason to. It would take at least a yr to build an econ capaible (able? m-w.com) of maxing out on cash equipment. Right now I think the only reason I'm still playing is because of sunk cost. Those gold builds are $__________$ even tho it's kinda pointless if you look ahead. When will anyone rly be able to afford buying those jets at a reasonable rate.

Still wanting to upgrade my nightclub to level 2. I was almost ready to leave the 50ish levels by farming M4s but that is gone now. My alternative strategy outcome is questionable in terms of competiveness when it comes to fighting people with a full deck of M4s so i'm not sure i will bother after the club upgrade is done.

OK, I am an idiot.

When CounterSniper said "Charlie Mike" in his post above, he was saying goodbye, and I did not make the connection.
