Technically speaking, you buy gold using credit/debit, which you may not consider to be "real money" and definitely not "cold, hard cash." :p

But yeah, the only way to earn gold through the game's mechanics is purchasing it. However, I recall some threads that alluded to the idea that if you help the devs solve technical problems that they may "reward" you.
