Dumb question...

This is probably a really dumb question to some people but is your alliance attack just all of your units attack added together? And if that's true that's the same for defense, right?

it's not dumb. but if you were to read a little bit, you wouldn't have to ask.

a level 5 player is allowed to use 25 allies in a battle. lvl 10 uses 50. lvl 30 uses 150.

each ally is allowed to bring 4 units.

these are maximums. you may own more units, you may have more allies, but the extras are extras, they stay home.

Only the best units go to battle. Mr level 5 brings maximum 100 best units to battle. lvl 10 brings 200. level 30 brings 600.

Thanks but that's not really what I meant....when you go you your profile and it says alliance attack is that just your units attack? Or is it your units plus your allies units. If that is true about your alliance units all added up, then wouldnt it be better to have a lot of high allies than a bunch of Lvl 5s?

Your ally does not 'bring' units. Having an ally allows you to bring 4 extra of YOUR units to the battle.

EDIT: To clarify, because it is your units (and always four, regardless of the level of your ally) it is only the number of allies that matters. What level they are is irrelevant, although having having allies who could be a threat to you is preferable in order to reduce the amount of people who could target you.
