Is there a point of having an army size that exceeds four times your number of allies? I see lots of players with thousands of units in their army, even when their level and ally size dictate that a small subset of those should ever enter battle.

For example, say a level 50 player has 312 allies. Because of the ally rule, only 250 of those allies will count for battle purposes. Since each ally allows you to carry four units into battle, this level 50 player should have a maximum of 1,000 units in battle. Why would such a player carry 2,493 units, as per his stats?

Unless there are different battle mechanics between attacking a player versus defending an attack/raid?

Some people just dont know how the game works and buy tons and tons of units hoping that their power will raise. However this is true if they are buying stronger units than the ones they previously used. Having over 1400 more units than his maximum doesnt make sense though unless he replaced his entire army twice.

Also a lot of the missions require you to have tons of units like 100 rangers or something like that. So, many people wi have a few hundred over their limit.

Said missions will also, over time, generate dozens of loot units.

There is a point other than the missions. Different units can count towards attacks and defense. This means is they had 1000 rangers and 1000 transports, then the rangers would be used when attacking and the transports used in defense.
