Mafia (Defense, Attack & Number) - QUESTION

Hello Everyone!

Is there an advantage to adding/being added by another player? Right now when I add other players, only my total number of mafia increase and not my numbers for mafia defense or attack? How do I get my defense and attack numbers to increase?
