When you win/lose a battle with a rival what does the skull with the x through it for?

It means you lost a unit during the battle. You can scroll down where the units used are displayed, and at the bottom it will show you which unit(s) you lost.
Means how many units you lost during the battle.

After a while you are gonna lose more and more units until you need to replace all of them, it gets really expensive

Get all indestructible units and it clears this all up.

haha - a full gold army would be nice, but most of us can't afford that.
That said, if the boss events stay as generous as the current one, with scratchers giving (rubbish) indestructibles every few days, crate events giving at least three units and WD events too, a full non-gold indestructible army is within reach for new players.
Monthly:
Boss - 72 (36 units x 2)
Crates - 3-4
Scratchers - 8
WD - 2
If camping apart from these events then it would only take a meagre 24 months to have a fully indestructible army :) An investment of a couple of vaults of gold when first starting to play would help no end too. For example, at level seven buy 5 vaults on sale (+2500 bonus gold), get crates with 8000 of that (rest for events) and you have a 137 indestructible unit head start and sufficient stats to beat the bosses without too much trouble.
As an aside, wouldn't it be nice if casualties were shown at the TOP of the unit list as opposed to the bottom?
