Item usage atk v def

Does anyone know off hand if the system choses the best items for atk and or the best items for def from your total possible or if it's the highest total value? Basically wondering if it's useful to have items geared towards atk and def

It does both.
So if you have 100 mafia, you can use 500 items (gun, melee, armour, vehicles, explosive, 100 of each).
To calculate the def score it tackes the top 100 of each for def, attack score comes from top 100 fore attack.
These won't be same items, for instance armouredtruch (loot item on PvP) will always be used to calculate your def score, but never be used in your attack score.

Best way to prove this is buy an expensive attacking explosive, if it were used for both you'd see your def score go down as it has 0 def, but it dosn't cos it is not used.
