How Attack and Defense are calculated

Better understanding of how Robberies work, also a better understanding of how fights work. I've been having some problems with my hood. I've worked on just gettin good defense buildings, with pretty good level, also i've purchased more weapons that help towards defense. Assuming it would benefit me while being attacked/robbed. I looked at a couple profiles that attacked me and their stats are way below either of mine. Same for when i attack/rob and lose. or when someone has barely any defense buildings, makes good income, and just has good defense on his character and I keep losing robberies.. Any advice would be helpful. You can PM if that works easier.
