Why am I losing fights?

I attacked a level 30 with 43 mafia members. These are his stats,

Total Mafia Attack: 487
Total Mafia Defense: 705
Equipment used: 154

These are my stats: lvl 30 with 44 mafia members.

Total mafia attack: 663
Total mafia Defense: 953
Equipment used: 160

I continue to lose fights in this maner!!! Why? my attack and defense are clearly higher by nearly 200 each!

Please someone inform me why I am losing fights where i have higher stats.

atk v.s def , not atk v.s atk.

So i need to increase my attack to above their defense level? I seemed to lose fights to people who i have a higher defense then their attack

add point to your attack skill points. for sure win at low level, find people that have def < your atk points.
