Find a good kingdom to raid!
PvP attacks on rivals do not count for goals.
All buildings (boost, def, etc..) work for goals.

Since when does "defeat" mean "raid"?
Is there any QA? Does anybody associated with running it actually play? Why the pardon-my-French do I have to come to a website to figure out how to play?

"Defeat" can mean attack or raid.
It wasn't that hard to figure out.
The goal says to invade.
After a couple attacks didn't work, I raided and it worked.

Yeah... the word "invade" isn't there.
Ever notice that the hero doesn't defend raids? Hard to see how that's defeating a rival.

No, the button says "Invade"; the description says "defeat". If you didn't notice and thought the description was actually accurate, you could easily dump a bunch of stamina without realizing you need to be raiding instead of attacking. Which is exactly what some people are doing. They could have easily use the word "raid" everywhere if it specifically requires raiding.
Even if you're looking at "defeat" as a very broad term like that, then attacking should work just as well as raiding. But it doesn't. In either case, the quest is not correct in some capacity. Either the wording should be revised to be more clear or the requirements should be satisfied by attacking players (and possibly still raiding, if the developers actually subscribe to your definition of "defeat").

Yes, the goal's button says , which goes to the Rivals List where one can [INVADE] or [ATTACK]. Since we know what attack means, I figured that [INVADE] meant to raid: go to rival kingdom, pick a building, and tap.

No, I have not noticed that... Defense Buildings defend only against raids. Therefore, I would figure Heroes can defend raids thru their kingdom's defense buildings.
But, I think you mean [i]defeat, as in "Defeat 8 of your rivals to become stronger!" which simply means to defeat (successfully raid) your rivals.
