True, true but sometimes it was a bit too much. I enjoyed the Machete Kills Again......In Space! fake trailer at the beginning. I will admit I may have been a bit harsh with my rating. It's one of those so bad it's good movies.
Batman v Superman: 7/10, the critical thrashing was a bit excessive. I went in expecting it to suck and it didn't so I guess that must've inflated my score for it.

Gamera vs. Gayaos (1967) 7/10
Standard Japanese giant monster movie fare. Gayaos is a bit cheap, but some of the battle scenes are excellent.
Gamera vs. Viras (1968) 4/10
By contrast this fourth outing for the giant turtle is pretty dreadful. It's 86 minutes long, of which around a quarter is footage recycled from the previous three films in the series. Also far too much pre-pubescent kids running around shouting "Gamera" and some hapless attempts at comedy. Four out of ten might be generous!

I imagine the brainstorming session for Civil War went something like this: "Hey you know what would be cool? If we had the Avengers fight each other!" "Yeah... how would we set that up?" "Does it really matter?"
Seriously... without going into details that would involve spoilers, there was absolutely no plot development to support any of that infighting. The whole movie was based on an unsupported premise. Beyond that, yeah... cool fight scenes, bro.

I was worried about that to some extent, and it is why I am less enthusiastic about this one than any of them. I understand the upcoming X-Men is even worse, just a contest to see how many super heroes you can fit onto one set.
I also think the last Avengers was a step down from the first one. The robot villain did nothing for me.

Not a movie, but I saw the Book of Mormon yesterday. Funny, but not as clever as I expected. And don't get me wrong, I love South Park, and I thought Bigger, Longer, and Uncut was amazing, but there's something out of place about seeing south park humor (especially the toilet kind) performed live in theater with the cheapest tickets being over $100 each. Meh....I publish for a living, and as such, read a LOT, so I don't really feel like I am missing out. The graphic novel category has become pretty big, adult coloring books are blowing up right now, and every city seems to have a comic con where adults dress up like Halloween in super hero costumes. It's just not my thing, seems like a whole generation of people who have no interest in growing up, and nobody is forcing them too.
Not to bag on them or anything, I like the Marvel movies and occasional video game, etc, but I do draw the line.

If it's a crime to enjoy movies that aren't padded out to ridiculous length; aren't dependant on special effects to carry the thin plot (and don't have soundtracks with the reverb rammed up to maximum to make them louder, sorry LOUDER!!!!!!!), then I'm happily guilty. :)

The Man Who Laughs (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Who_Laughs_%281928_film%29) (Paul Leni, 1928) 8/10
No apologies for posting another old film. I was initially drawn to this one by the claim that the hideous grin carved onto the face of the title character was one inspiration behind 'The Joker' in the Batman comics, and you can definitely see that; although that's as far as it goes with that particular connection. This one is sometimes cited as being a horror film, but it's not. What it is is a melodrama, but with a gothic German expressionist visual palette, so in the same category as 'The Hunchback Of Notre Dame' and 'Phantom Of The Opera' really. Worth seeing. The acting from the principals is terrific, especially leading man Conrad Veidt who has to do most of his facial acting with eyes alone because of the large appliance over his mouth to create the grinning disfigurement.
Interesting also as a halfway house between the silent era and talkies; the film has a movietone soundtrack which features crowd noise and sound effects alongside the musical score. Dialogue is still on inter-titles.
The only real disappointment with the DVD is that it lacks the tinting of the original film. Hopefully someone will restore that sometime.

Freaks (Tod Browning, 1932) 7/10
I'd give this a higher rating if it weren't for the flaws. The central 'little people' roles are taken by Harry Earles and his sister Daisy. They were German and although their English is perfectly good, they weren't actors by profession so much of their dialogue comes across a bit wooden; Daisy especially - she has a tendency to talk like Yoda; I suspect she was thinking her lines in German before speaking them in English, so the phrasing is odd.
Harry had been in an earlier Browning silent movie (The Hateful Three, 1925), where he's terrific I hear. He's probably best known now for his role in The Wizard Of Oz. Olga Baclanova as Cleopatra rather overacts during some of her speeches I think.
In the original uncut film, Hercules the strong-man is emasculated at the climax. That got swept away in the 30 minutes of cuts (one third of the film's uncut duration!) demanded by New York. I can't say I missed it; he is last seen scrabbling in the mud and rain with the vengeful freaks advancing on him. His uncertain fate is probably better than what would have been seen.

Hey there, I don't refuse to watch modern films, but it would be so nice if they laid off the reverb. Remember all those 80s records which are tough to listen to now because of the awful production techniques used back then; I suspect the same might happen with films if the tide should turn at some point.

Check out his Keystone comedies. I've spent the last few days watching those too. A lot of good ones in there, but on this thread I've only been rating the feature length films I've been watching. I do have my ratings for those shorts saved somewhere else though.

I'll be doing that sometime. Have got the new set of Keaton's shorts to watch first though.

Proxy War (Kinji Fukasaku, 1973) - 10/10
Third part of the "Battles Without Honour And Humanity" series. I'm continually amazed how writer and director manage to maintain such standards at a furious pace. This was the third film to come out in 1973, with the last two in 1974. Not quite so much violence in this movie, which concentrates more on the politicking and factionalism within the yakuza gangs of western Japan in the early 60s.

Battles Without Honour And Humanity: The Final Chapter (Kinji Fukasaku, 1974) - 9/10
A perfectly fine film in its own right, but does feel like a slight afterthought to the series, which it was really. It's interesting that when the Toei company made a 224 minute combined saga of the whole series in 1980, they didn't include any of this film in it. Great series of films.

When you review a movie you have to rate it based on year it was made, Genre and what else was being made in the time I think. To give top gun a 6/10 now would be like watching ice pirates 3D vs Avatar, but both were ahead of thier time granted avatar was tons more polished but look at the technology difference between 1982ish and now.
Top Gun is a classic in its era, is there one person who saw it then and hears Kenny Logins and Danger Zone that doesn't think of that movie and smile, that makes it a 8.5-9 min.
Like Footloose, the original, you hear footloose somewhere playing and you think of that movie, which was good in its time but would likely seem "cheesy" to someone younger.
Just my thoughts on reviewing. :)

A curious film, which starts off rather lightweight for the first half, and I was thinking maybe 6/10 but then it got a lot darker and more gritty; which was more 8 or 9/10. So maybe 8/10 overall

The Wind That Shakes The Barley (Ken Loach - 2006)
8/10 Like most freedom fighter films, this isn't without problems - the usual one of the 'bad guys' being presented as one dimensional thugs being foremost. Some of the actors are not professionals I don't think, and that does show occasionally. When the focus changes from the fight against the Brits to the internal divisions after the treaty, the film maybe asks too much knowledge of a confused period in Irish history from the viewer.
Even with its faults, this film still kicks butt out of any dreadful Hollywood schlock like Revolution or Braveheart. ;)

A couple more Japanese films
Branded To Kill (Seijun Suzuki - 1967)
9/10 Dismissed as 'incomprehensible' by the studio head, the director was fired. The film is now regarded as his masterpiece.
Trapped In Lust (Atsushi Yamatoya - 1973)
A 'Roman Porno' remake of the above, ie with a lot of sex scenes that don't really add much to the storyline at all. Sadly by this time Japanese cinema was in steep decline from a combination of Hollywood movies and, even more so, competition from television. These soft porn vehicles were one sector that maintained any audience.
7/10 As said, the sex doesn't really add much to the story. The film is not as satisfying as the original film despite some good things in it. There is one outstanding feature though; the number one baddies are what appear to be a very tall guy who goes around with a walking midget size ventriloquist's dummy. Very creepy indeed. Not all is as it seems though.
